      ProtonVPN

      Summary
ProtonVPN is a privacy-focused virtual private network operated by Proton AG, the same organisation behind Proton Mail. It is designed with a strong emphasis on security, anonymity, and resistance to surveillance, offering features such as a strict no-logs policy, Secure Core multi-hop routing, strong encryption, and support for modern protocols like WireGuard and OpenVPN.

ProtonVPN stands out to me because its threat model is explicit and well-documented. The service is built to protect against traffic correlation, ISP-level monitoring, and hostile network environments, rather than just masking an IP address. While I appreciate it's not perfect, independent audits, open-source client components, and transparent disclosures make it easier to assess trustworthiness compared to many other commercial VPN providers.

Day-to-day I mostly use it for convenience to get around censorship controls. Although if I'm travelling, working from shared infra, or accessing sensitive tooling outside of a hardened environment, it also provides the general assurance of a reliable encrypted tunnel that reduces exposure to opportunistic interception or manipulation.

I also use ProtonVPN operationally during recon and testing to separate research activity from my primary network footprint. Rotating exit locations helps validate geo-based controls, regional content exposure, and location-dependent behaviour in web apps without introducing unnecessary complexity or risk. Also saves me time having to spin up residential proxies.
